A U-Line undercounter refrigerator that hums all afternoon in July is often fighting heat, tight cabinetry or dirty airflow paths. Here is how to tell normal effort from a real problem.
Houston summers push every built-in refrigerator harder, and a compact undercounter model feels it first. A unit that runs for long stretches is not always broken, but it deserves a closer look before a small issue becomes a warm shelf of groceries.
An undercounter refrigerator sheds heat through the front grille. When the kitchen is hot, when a patio door stays open, or when the cabinet around the unit traps warm air, the compressor has to run longer to keep up. Lint, pet hair and kitchen grease on the condenser make it worse because heat has nowhere to go.
Start with the simple things. Make sure nothing is leaning against the grille and that the door closes without bouncing back. Set the temperature where you want it and leave it alone for a full day, since changing the dial repeatedly keeps the unit working without ever settling.
Then feel the air leaving the grille. Slightly warm air is normal. Very hot air, or a smell like something overheating, means the unit is struggling and should be looked at soon.
Constant running that does not improve after a cleaning and a clear grille usually points to airflow, a weak fan or a cooling system problem. Those are not do-it-yourself repairs.
