Ice Fused Into a Block in Your U-Line Ice Maker Bin

When cubes freeze into one lump, the bin is warming and refreezing. Here is why that happens in Houston kitchens and how to stop it.

You reach for ice and find a single frozen mass instead of loose cubes. It is a common complaint with undercounter ice makers, and it nearly always means the ice has been partly melting and refreezing in the bin.

Why ice clumps

  • Infrequent use: ice that sits for weeks slowly sublimates and fuses, especially in a bin that is not emptied.
  • Warm air getting in: a door that does not close fully or a worn gasket lets humid Houston air in, which melts the surface of the ice.
  • Poor drainage: melt water that cannot leave the bin pools around the bottom ice and freezes it together.
  • Hot surroundings: a unit in a garage or an outdoor kitchen works harder and may cycle more often.

How to fix it at home

  1. Empty the bin and let any remaining block melt. Never chip at it with a knife or ice pick, because that can puncture a liner or damage the bin.
  2. Wipe the bin and the drain opening clean.
  3. Check the door gasket by closing the door on a slip of paper. If it slides out easily, the seal is weak.
  4. Restart the unit and use or discard ice regularly, so it never sits for long.

Know when it is more than habit

If clumping returns within a few days after you cleaned the bin, or you notice water pooling in the bottom, the drain or the door seal may need attention. A drain that is slow to clear can also leave a faint musty smell.

In a home where the unit is used only for parties, we suggest emptying the bin once a month and making a fresh batch before guests arrive.
