Gurgling Noise or Standing Water in Your U-Line Ice Maker Drain

A gurgle, a hum with no water moving, or a puddle in the cabinet usually points to the drain system. Here is what to check and when to stop.

Many U-Line ice makers move melt water and cleaning rinse out of the cabinet with a small drain pump. When that system struggles, you hear it before you see it. A gurgling or humming sound that goes on for a long time, or a shallow puddle of water inside the cabinet, is the usual first sign.

What the sounds usually mean

  • A short hum followed by water leaving the unit is normal pump operation.
  • A long hum with no water moving can mean the pump is running dry or is blocked.
  • A gurgle that repeats means air is getting into the drain line, often from a kink or a partial clog.

Checks you can do safely

  1. Pull the unit out only if it is built to slide, and look at the drain hose for kinks or sharp bends behind the cabinet.
  2. Make sure the hose runs smoothly to the drain tie-in and is not pressed flat by a cabinet panel or a stored item.
  3. Look for a slimy film where the hose connects. Houston tap water often leaves mineral and slime that narrows the line.
  4. Check that the bin is free of loose ice that has melted and refrozen into a block over the drain opening.

Do not pour harsh drain cleaners into the ice maker. They can damage plastic parts and leave a taste in the ice. Do not run the unit for days with water standing inside, because that is where odors and slime start.

When to call

If the pump keeps running, water backs up after a cleaning cycle, or you see wetness on the floor of the cabinet, switch the unit off at the control and let us look. A worn pump, a stuck float switch, and a clogged line each need a different fix, and guessing can push water toward your cabinetry.
