What E1 means

On U-Line ice machines such as the UONB115, UHNP315 and UCLR1215, E1 means Thermistor 1 is open. The control cannot read that temperature sensor, so the ice-making cycle runs without one of its inputs. E1 appears on the display, and ice production slows or stops until the sensor circuit is restored and the reading returns to normal. Its shorted counterpart is E5.

Common causes of E1

  • Thermistor 1 has failed open
  • The sensor wire is broken or a connector is loose
  • The control is not reading the sensor input
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Switch the machine off, wait a minute and turn it on again. 2. Make sure the area around the machine has room for airflow. 3. Check that the bin door is closed all the way. 4. Do not open panels or pull on wires. 5. If E1 comes back after the restart, call us.

! Why to stop there
  • An open sensor can sit in the sensor, its wire or the board, and each needs a different repair
  • Replacing parts without testing adds cost with no gain
  • We quote first and cover our work for 30 days
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

E1E1 questions
What does E1 mean on my ice machine?

E1 means Thermistor 1 is open, so the control lost the signal from that temperature sensor. It applies to the UONB115, UHNP315 and UCLR1215. The code stays up until the reading returns.

Is E1 the opposite of E5?

Yes. E1 reports Thermistor 1 open and E5 reports the same sensor shorted. The conditions differ, but both involve the first sensor and both need the circuit tested.

Will the machine still make ice with E1 showing?

Output is reduced or stops, because the cycle needs that reading. If you see little or no ice after a restart, call us and we will test the sensor circuit.
