Frost on the Back Wall of Your U-Line Refrigerator: What Is Causing It

A sheet of frost behind the shelves of your U-Line refrigerator is a clue, not just a chore. Learn the usual causes and what to try before calling for service.

A thin film of frost on the back wall can be normal in some undercounter models, but thick, growing frost usually means moisture is getting in or the unit is not clearing it away properly. Catching it early keeps shelves usable and protects the cooling system.

Common reasons frost builds up

  • The door is not sealing, so humid Houston air enters every time it shifts
  • The door was propped open during loading or cleaning
  • Uncovered liquids and open containers add moisture inside
  • The temperature is set colder than needed
  • Food or bottles are touching the back wall
  • Airflow inside is blocked by a crowded shelf

What to try

  1. Unplug the unit and remove food. Leave the door open with towels on the floor.
  2. Let the frost melt naturally. Never chip it with a knife, scraper or hair dryer, since a slip can puncture the cooling lines.
  3. Wipe the interior dry and check the door seal for gaps, tears or hardened spots.
  4. Reload with items spaced away from the back wall.
  5. Set the temperature to a moderate level and give the unit a day to settle.

If frost returns within a week or two, the cause is probably not your habits. A worn seal, a damaged drain or a part that controls cooling cycles could be letting moisture build up.

Signs it is more than frost

  • Water stains or a small puddle when the frost melts and does not drain
  • Food at the front staying warm while the back is icy
  • A fan that is silent or noisy when the door opens

An icy back wall paired with warm shelves is a common sign that air is not moving the way it should. That deserves a technician rather than another round of defrosting.
