Food Safety When a U-Line Refrigerator Warmed Up While You Were Away

Came home to a warm U-Line refrigerator after a trip or outage? Learn how to judge what to keep, what to discard and when to stop using the unit until it is checked.

Coming back from a trip or a long weekend to a refrigerator that feels warm is stressful. An undercounter unit in a bar or game room often holds party food, dairy for guests and drinks, so it helps to know how to judge what is safe.

Start with the facts you can confirm

Ask how long the unit may have been warm. Check whether the power was out, whether a breaker tripped or whether the door was left slightly open. If you keep a refrigerator thermometer inside, read it first. Without one, check how the food feels to the touch.

A cautious way to sort food

  • Items that are still cold to the touch and were only briefly warm are usually fine to keep.
  • Milk, cream, soft cheese, deli meat, cut fruit, cooked leftovers and raw meat are the most sensitive. When in doubt, throw them out.
  • Sealed drinks, hard cheese, mustard and similar condiments are generally more forgiving.
  • Anything with an off smell, slimy surface or unusual color should go in the trash.

The general rule most food safety guidance follows is that perishable food held above safe refrigerator temperatures for more than a couple of hours should be discarded. Do not taste food to decide.

Before you restock

  1. Clean the inside with mild soap and warm water to remove spoilage and odors.
  2. Make sure the door closes fully and the grille is clear.
  3. Let the unit run empty for several hours and confirm it gets properly cold.
  4. Only then return food to the shelves.

When to stop using the unit

If the refrigerator still does not cool after being plugged in and the breaker is on, do not keep loading it with food. A unit that fails to cool might have a problem with the fan, a control or the cooling system, and each of those needs a proper inspection.
