What Port Bolivar homes change about a U-Line repair

Local housing, power events, water conditions, and installation styles all affect how we approach U-Line diagnostics here.

Housing

Early settlers and a railroad to Beaumont

In 1819 James Long set up his base on this spot, and Samuel D Parr mapped it in 1838. The town tried Parrsville, Pepper Grove and Gabion before landing on Port Bolivar in 1893.

A rail link to Beaumont came in 1896, and early residents gathered around Fort Travis. Now permanent houses sit among raised beach homes, which puts units everywhere from kitchens to open decks.

Water

The far end of a long pipeline

Treated surface water travels down the peninsula from a Lower Neches Valley Authority plant by Winnie, delivered by the utility district. Port Bolivar is the last stop on the western end.

A machine at the tail of a pipeline gets weak pressure, and the result is ice cubes that are small or hollow. We examine the filter and inlet screen, then the valve.

Weather & power

Channel wind and Gulf spray

Bolivar Roads, the channel to Galveston, and the open Gulf send salty wind across every yard. Parts left exposed corrode quickly.

Condenser coils and cabinet screws under raised houses suffer most. We clean the coil and check hinges and screws for early corrosion.

Typical installs

Kitchen sets and compact beach-house gear

Permanent residents commonly have a regular kitchen, with either freestanding or slide-in range and a 24-inch dishwasher. Raised beach houses save room with compact laundry and smaller refrigerators.

Beverage and wine cooling usually goes on a deck or in a garage bay. We check clearance, the outlet and the drain path.

Our route is the free TxDOT ferry out of Galveston, where summer queues can be long, so visits are set a day or more out. Directions are easy with the Bolivar Point Lighthouse, built in 1872 and unlit since 1933, as a landmark. We phone while crossing.

Sagging water pressure can leave an ice maker producing small or hollow cubes. Clear the inlet screen, change the filter on time because a clogged one makes things worse, and note if it happens only at certain hours. For recurring breaker trips, call an electrician; for a weak supply line, call a plumber.

04Port Bolivar questions
Why are the cubes from our clear ice machine small and hollow?

The machine is not getting enough water. A clogged filter, low pressure or a tired water valve is usually behind it, so start with a new filter and call us if the cubes stay small.

Will the ferry wait change when you arrive?

Sometimes, mainly on summer weekends. Ferry time is part of our planning, a call goes out when the technician sets off, and a long line may send him around through Winnie.

Our patio refrigerator has rust on the screws. Is that serious?

Surface rust is common in salt air. We clean it, check hinges and condenser and tell you whether it threatens cooling.
